~    Lessons From a Carrot, Egg and Coffee Bean      ~
(by Michael Josephson )

I receive the weekly letter of Michael Josephson. I want to tell you about this week's letter (September 20).

"Let's face it. Painful personal trauma and tragedy -- like illness or injury, death of a loved one, loss of a job or an unexpected breakup of a relationship -- are unavoidable.
The question is:
Will these private calamities erode our capacity to be happy or cause us to become stronger and better able to live a meaningful and fulfilling life?
Consider how differently the carrot, egg and a cup of ground coffee beans are affected by the extreme adversity of being boiled.
Like the carrot, adversity can soften us. We can emerge more flexible, understanding, compassionate and grateful or we can let our life spirit turn into a soft mush.
Like the egg, the boiling water can make us harder; stronger, tougher and wiser or we can become more cynical, pessimistic, callous and inaccessible.
And like the coffee bean, we can willingly transform our lives into something better or simply lose ourselves completely.

No, we can't control what happens to us, but we have a lot to say about how we react and, therefore, what happens in us.
The first step to turning adversity into advantage is to get out of the hot water as quickly as possible. Don't dwell on catastrophe. Grieve but move on. Don't define your life by misfortune.
Second, force yourself to move forward. Draw on inner strengths, the people who love you, and your faith to help you transform your life into something better. Formulate a vision of a more purposeful life filled with people and experiences that will help you become more fulfilled.
"

This is what I am trying to do. With the help of the Lord, I hope I will succeed.
I love you.

Santorini island brings warm memories into my heart. It is where you have chosen to be your wedding place.
Your friend, Wissam Jada, has a beautiful website that I visit regularly. He has beautiful pictures of the island. Here it is.
During the 2004 Olympics, NBC used to show on their channel the beautiful church with the blue dome.
My wish was to visit there on your wedding week.
It never happened.

~    A Prayer I like     ~

"Steer the ship of my life to your quiet harbor, Good Lord,
where I can be safe from the storms of sin and conflict.
Give me the strength and courage to recognize the course I should take
that I find in you comfort, peace and shelter from the storm."

~    A Mass in India     ~

I received a message from Reverand Francis Kizhakkethazhe from Bangalore, India. This is what he wrote me.
"I know how important the month of September is for you. I have offered a special mass for your family on September 30 at 9:00 pm Indian time. May the comfort of the Lord continue to heal you and strengthen you."
Thank you father Francis for your prayers.

~    Feast of the Guardian Angels     ~

Today is the feast of "The Gurdian Angels". Monsignor Peter Moran in his Homily pointed out that our Guardian Angels do four things for us:
1-They guard us.
2-They protect us.
3-They guide us.
4-They help us.

"For He will give His angels charge of you to guard you in all your ways. Psalm 91:11

We pray for them each night.

~    Feast of St. Francis Assisi     ~

October 4 is the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi. Here is his prayer for peace:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred . . . let me sow love
Where there is injury . . . pardon
Where there is doubt . . . faith
Where there is despair . . .hope
Where there is darkness . . . light
Where there is sadness . . .joy

O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled . . .as to console
To be understood . . .as to understand,
To be loved . . . as to love

For it is in giving . . .that we receive,
It is in pardoning, that we are pardoned,
It is in dying . . .that we are born to eternal life

~    TALK     ~

Our priest, Father Leo del Carmen, preached the following in his homily:

To feel great every morning one should follow "TALK".
T:    for Thank God.
A:    for Achnowledge God.
L:    for Love God.
K:    for kneel to God.
When we do these four things, it is then that we feel great.

~    Love in the Bible     ~

Since that horrible day in September of 2001, I started going to church to pray daily. Every day in church I hear the word “LOVE” more than one time. Love the Lord. Love Jesus. Love Mary. Love your brother. Love your neighbor. Love your enemy.
The Bible is full of the word love and talks a lot about love.
Please visit this web page to read about love in the bible.
“God loved the World so much that He sent his only son to die so that by believing in Jesus Christ we obtain Eternal Life”.
(John 3: 16)
I hope one day the world will be full of LOVE and understanding.

I received by post mail a card from your friend Anna Marie, a classmate of yours at Stanford. She enclosed a photo dated November 1986. It was taken on the day of her Birthday Party. You can see it by clicking on the thumbnail above.
It is so thoughtful of her.
Thank you Anna Marie for the card and thank you for the photo.
They sure made up my day !

~    Today's Prayer     ~

Lord!
Lead us from death to life, from falsehood to truth.
Lead us from despair to hope, from fear to trust.
Lead us from hate to LOVE, from war to PEACE.
Let peace fill our heart, our world, our universe.
Peace, peace, peace.
Amen

~    Brother Lawrence     ~

Ranya Nasrallah gave me a book called "The Practice of the Presence of God". I read it with enthusiasm. It is about a seventeenth century French monk called Lawrence. I enjoyed reading it tremendously.
