The American Flag
(This flag was flewn in Space by NASA)
From December 5 to 17, 2001, the U. S. Space Shuttle Endeavour soared above the Earth to the International
Space Station, carrying with it an international crew who by
working together are building a better future for our world. Accompanying them
on that flight were 6,000 American flags to honor the victims and heroes of the September 11, 2001
attack upon the World Trade Center in New York City, NY, the Pentagon in Arlington, VA and the crash
in Shanksville, PA.
A symbol of freedom that has endured for more that two centuries, the American flag, has been displayed
throughout the Earth, to the Moon and in the far reaches of space, indicating not just
a Nation's pride and accomplishment, but its resolve and commitment
for liberty and justice for all. The flight of these flags into space is emblematic of the American spirit
that knows no limits or impossibilities. Regardless of challenges or strife, the lyric remains to this day,
"... our flag was still there."
